GUATEMALAN KITE MAKING WORKSHOP
with master kitemaker, Julio Asturias
Lake Atitlan, Guatemala
Workshops can be arranged for groups of 6 or more with advance notice.
Learn about the Guatemalan tradition of kitemaking and the Kachiquel Maya custom of making Giant Kites for the Day of the Dead in Sumpango, Sacatepequez. Make your own traditional eight-sided Guatemalan kite using tissue paper and glue, creating a design unique to you! Then let your kite take flight with your fellow kitemakers and feel your spirit rise! The group will also get to see a Giant Kite! A fun, educational & uniquely uplifting cultural experience!
"What a simply marvelous experience! A day spent being a child - creating, learning about and flying kites. Life doesn't get much better than this.
My husband and I took this workshop with Julio in April and enjoyed every single moment of it. From Julio, we learned the story behind the giant kites of Sumpongo and marveled at how the kite makers create kites of up to 22 metres! We were then given the tools to create our own kites; tissue paper, glue, scissors, string and sticks. (We did need to supply our own creativity and, miraculously, it appeared.) We astounded ourselves with our enjoyment of playing with colours, shapes and just the fun of creating something from 'nothing'. The creative enjoyment was only matched by the laughter while attempting to fly our kites and the thrill of seeing them in flight.
When I think of childhood, one of the images that always comes to mind is that of a child on the prairie flying a kite in a cloudless sky; the freedom, simplicity and sheer pleasure in the moment. Thank-you Julio and Louise for allowing us to be that child again." -- Gail Harrison
